How AI search works

AI search reads many pages at once and writes a single answer, choosing its sources by how clear and consistent each business looks and how much the wider web vouches for it. This guide explains how Google AI Overviews and AI assistants make those picks, in plain language.

From ten links to one answer

For twenty years, search meant a ranked list of links and you chose where to click. AI search flips that. The tool reads the pages for you and hands back one written answer, often with a few cited sources beside it.

That changes what visibility means. Position three on a list still got clicks. Being left out of a written answer gets nothing.

How Google AI Overviews picks sources

AI Overviews sits on top of normal Google search. When you search, Google pulls up the pages that would usually rank, and the AI writes a summary using the clearest of them as sources, with links shown next to the answer.

That means traditional rankings still matter. A page that can't rank rarely gets cited. One of our clients, BJH Law, holds 11 keywords at #1, and that ranking strength is exactly the raw material AI Overviews draws from.

The extra filter is quotability. Among pages that rank, the ones written in short, direct sentences are easier for the AI to lift and summarise. Dense or salesy pages get passed over.

How AI assistants pick businesses

Assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot work a little differently. For current or local questions they run their own web searches, read a batch of results, and decide which businesses they can describe without guessing.

They cross-check as they go. Your website says you serve Caloundra. Does your Google Business Profile agree? Do directories show the same phone number? Do reviews mention the same services? When everything matches, you become a safe business to name.

The signals both kinds share

Google AI Overviews and the assistants differ in plumbing, but they reward the same underlying signals.

  • A plain answer near the top of each page.
  • Service and location details that match everywhere online.
  • Steady, genuine reviews with replies from the business.
  • Mentions on sites other than your own.
  • Schema markup that labels what each page is about.

What this means for a local business

You can't buy your way into AI answers, and tricks don't hold for long. The businesses that get named are the ones that are easiest to understand and hardest to doubt.

Start with one service page. Make the answer obvious in the first two sentences, check your details match across the web, then repeat for the next page. Our guide on ranking in AI search lists the full set of actions.

Common questions

Is AI search the same as voice search?

They're related but different. Voice search reads out one short answer, usually from the same sources AI search trusts. Work that helps you in AI answers tends to help you in voice results too.

Does AI search read my website or my Google profile?

Both. Your website explains what you do, while your Google Business Profile, directories and reviews confirm it. AI tools weigh the two against each other before naming you.

Why does a competitor show up in AI answers and I don't?

Usually clarity and consistency. Their pages likely answer questions plainly, and their details match across the web. Run your own business through the checklist in this guide and the gaps tend to show quickly.

Does Google show an AI Overview for every search?

No. They appear mainly on question-style searches where a written summary helps. Many searches, especially quick navigational ones, still show the standard results page.
