Is SEO dead now that AI answers the search?
SEO isn't dead. AI answers now sit on top of most searches, and they still lean on the work SEO does. In 38 Australian Google searches we checked on 26 October 2026, 35 opened with an AI Overview, and 26 of those cited at least one website from the same search's organic top 10. The suburb searches opened with the map pack instead. Below is the data, what changed and what a local business should do now.
What we checked, and what we found
Most answers to this question are opinion pieces. We wanted a dated answer instead. On 26 October 2026 we pulled the live Google results for 38 searches that matter to local service businesses and their marketing, from "how to rank on google maps" to "seo sunshine coast". Each search ran once, on mobile, set to Australia, through DataForSEO, a paid search data service. For every search we recorded the organic top 10, any AI Overview and every source it cited, and any map pack.
The table sums it up. For a marketing question, an AI Overview is now the normal first thing a searcher sees. But the pages those Overviews quote overlap heavily with the pages that already rank, and the suburb searches behaved differently again.
Two limits matter. This is one snapshot, from one day and one national location setting. And the 38 searches are topics Smart Local targets and writes about, so they aren't a random sample of everything Australians type into Google. Treat the numbers as a dated record of how these results looked, then rerun the check on your own searches. The last section shows how.
The "is seo dead" results page itself, checked the same day, shows the other side of the picture. Its AI Overview listed 11 sources, and only one of them (a Reddit thread) came from a website that also sat in the organic top 10. So ranking helps, and it isn't the only way in.
| What we measured | Result (38 searches, 26 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Searches that opened with an AI Overview | 35 of 38 |
| Sources cited across those AI Overviews | 299 (between 4 and 14 per answer) |
| Different websites cited | 197 |
| Citations from a website that also ranked in that search's organic top 10 | 115 of 299 (38%) |
| Citations to the exact page that ranked in the top 10 | 96 of 299 (32%) |
| AI Overviews citing at least one website from their own top 10 | 26 of 35 |
| AI Overviews citing at least one website from their own top 3 | 23 of 35 |
| Citations to Australian (.au) websites | 56 of 299 |
| Searches showing a map pack | 4 of 38, including all 3 suburb searches |
| Suburb searches showing an AI Overview | 0 of 3 |
Why AI answers still run on SEO basics
Google's AI answers take their sources from the same index as ordinary results. Google's guidance on AI features says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet to appear as a supporting link, and that there are no additional requirements or special optimisations beyond that.
That puts every old job back on the list. If a page can't be crawled, indexed and shown with a snippet, it can't be quoted, no matter how good the writing is. Here's what the AI answers still depend on, as Google and OpenAI describe it at the time of writing (October 2026).
Google also says its AI features may run several related searches across subtopics and data sources to build one answer. In plain terms, one question from a customer can turn into a handful of searches behind the scenes. A business with one thin page per service gives that process very little to work with. A site that also answers the next questions a customer has, such as how long the job takes, what affects the cost and what to check before booking, has more chances to be picked as one of the sources.
- Crawling and indexing. Google's explanation of how Search works sets out three stages: crawling, indexing and serving results. It also says Google doesn't guarantee that it will crawl, index or serve any page. A page that never makes the index can't be a source.
- Snippet eligibility. Google's robots meta tag rules say nosnippet applies to AI Overviews and AI Mode and stops a page being used as a direct input to them, while max-snippet limits how much text can be used. A nosnippet tag left on by mistake removes a page from both the snippet and the AI answer.
- Text Google can read. The AI features guidance lists allowing crawling in robots.txt and by any CDN or hosting service, keeping important content in text form, and making structured data match the visible text among the things to get right.
- Pages that rank. In our snapshot, 26 of 35 AI Overviews cited at least one website from the organic top 10 of the same search, and 23 cited one from the top 3.
- Other AI tools have their own crawlers. OpenAI's crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is for search, and that sites which opt out of it won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. Blocking GPTBot is a separate setting about training AI models.
Where the AI Overviews got their sources
Video and forums take a large share of citations, and ordinary websites take the rest. YouTube was the most cited website in our set with 33 citations, then Reddit with 13. Google's own pages (its help centre, its business site and its developer documentation) added 24 between them. The other citations were spread thinly: no other single website was cited more than seven times.
Video, social and forum pages also show up in the ordinary results. In our 38 searches, 72 of the 380 organic top-10 places went to pages the data classes as forum or user-generated content, on 33 of the 38 results pages. YouTube led with 30 of those places, then Reddit and LinkedIn with 15 each and Quora with 6, plus a few Instagram and Facebook pages. The data doesn't say why, but it does show a business website sharing page one with videos and posts, not only with other websites.
What does that mean for a local business? The AI Overview picks pages that answer the exact question plainly, or that show first-hand experience, or that come from the company that makes the product. You can't be Google's help centre, and you can't control a Reddit thread. You can publish the clearest answer to the questions your customers ask, with detail only your business holds. Google's guidance on helpful content asks whether content provides original information, reporting, research or analysis, and analysis beyond the obvious. That's the gap a small business can fill.
| Source | Citations (of 299) | What it suggests for a local business |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | 33 | Short how-to videos get quoted on process questions. A plain walkthrough of a common job can earn a place. |
| Google's help, business and developer pages | 24 | On questions about Google's own products, Google cites itself. Link to those pages instead of trying to outrank them. |
| 13 | Threads get quoted for experience and opinion. Answer honestly where your customers ask, and expect no control over what's quoted. | |
| Semrush | 7 | Large SEO software publishers appear on marketing questions. They're unlikely to appear on most trade questions. |
| 5 | Posts and articles by named people get quoted. A real, named author with relevant experience helps. | |
| 192 other websites | 217 | A long tail, each cited a handful of times at most. This is where a clear, specific local business page competes. |

Local searches still open with the map pack
When a search names a place, the map pack still comes first. In our snapshot the three suburb searches, "seo sunshine coast", "seo noosa" and "seo beerwah", each showed a three-business map pack and no AI Overview. The broader "local seo" search showed both.
The map pack runs on Google Business Profile. Google's help on local ranking says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. It counts how many websites link to a business and how many reviews it has as part of prominence, and it says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results.
None of that is new, and none of it has been replaced by AI answers. For a plumber, electrician or physio, the map pack is often where the call comes from, so it deserves a regular slot on the calendar. Our guide to ranking on Google Maps covers each step. The jobs that matter most:
- Keep the profile's categories, services, hours and service areas complete and current.
- Ask every customer for a review at the same point in the job, and reply to the reviews you get.
- Keep the business name, address and phone number identical on your website and every listing site.
- Give each service you want found its own page on your website, so the profile and the searcher land somewhere relevant.
- Check your suburb yourself: three suburbs on one day is a small sample, and your area may show an AI Overview above the map.

What has actually changed
The answer often sits above your link now, so ranking no longer means the searcher reaches your page. Being quoted inside that answer has become a second target, alongside ranking in the list below it.
Citations behave differently from rankings. A ranking is one position on a list. An AI Overview can quote a page that ranks second alongside a page that isn't on the first page of results at all, and in our snapshot that was common: 62% of citations came from websites outside that search's organic top 10. So the page that wins the citation is the one with the plainest answer to the exact question, and that isn't always the page with the strongest links. For a small local business, that's good news. A clear, specific page can be quoted alongside much larger websites.
Google's AI features guidance says Google has seen that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, meaning people are more likely to spend more time on the site. That's Google's observation, not ours, so test it against your own enquiries before you rely on it.
Measuring got harder too. At the time of writing (October 2026), Google counts traffic from AI features in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type, mixed in with ordinary results. A page can gain impressions while its clicks stay flat, and the report won't tell you which came from an AI answer. Our guide to Google AI impressions explains how to read those numbers.
| Area | What still holds | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Getting found | Pages must be crawled, indexed and eligible for a snippet | The same page can also be quoted inside an AI answer above the links |
| Winning the click | A clear title and description still earn the click | On simple questions the searcher may get what they need from the AI answer and never scroll |
| Writing pages | Answer the question people actually search | A plain first sentence and original detail suit both ranking and being quoted |
| Local searches | Business Profile, reviews and consistent listings drive the map pack | In our snapshot, suburb searches showed the map pack and no AI Overview |
| Measuring | Search Console clicks, impressions and position | AI feature traffic sits inside the Web search type, so judge pages on enquiries as well |
| Crawler access | Googlebot must be allowed to crawl | ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot; blocking it keeps a site out of ChatGPT search answers |
What a local business should do differently
Keep doing SEO, and move some of the effort. Here's the order we'd work in for a trade or local service business, starting with the checks that cost nothing.
Nobody can promise you an AI citation or a ranking, and that includes us. Google says it doesn't guarantee that it will crawl, index or serve any page, and each AI answer picks its own sources. What you control is whether your pages are eligible, clear and worth quoting. If you're getting visits but not calls, our guide to traffic without leads is the next read.
- Check the basics first. Confirm in Search Console that your main service pages are indexed, and check that none carries a nosnippet tag by mistake. Our guide to snippets and AI eligibility shows what to look for.
- Open every service page with a direct answer. One or two sentences that say what you do, where and for whom, before the detail. That's the passage an AI answer can lift on its own.
- Add the facts only you hold. The jobs you see most in your area, the questions customers ask on site, what usually goes wrong and why. It's the original detail Google's helpful content guidance asks for, and it gives an AI answer something no other site says.
- Answer the follow-up questions. Google says AI features may run several related searches across subtopics to build one answer. A service page that also covers the three or four questions people ask next gives that process more to draw on.
- Put the map pack on the calendar. Profile, reviews and listings, every month.
- Check crawler access. Make sure robots.txt, your host and any security service aren't blocking Googlebot or OAI-SearchBot, unless you've decided to block them.
- Measure enquiries, not just clicks. Track calls and form leads by page, so a drop in clicks on an informational page doesn't hide a steady flow of jobs.
How to check this for your own searches
You can rerun a small version of our check in an afternoon with a phone and a spreadsheet. It won't match a paid data service for consistency, but it will show you what your customers see.
Results vary by location, device and day, so every check is a snapshot, the same as ours. The value is in the trend. If your site starts turning up in the cited sources, or a competitor drops out, you'll see it across a few months of dated checks. For more on how the Overview chooses its pages, read how Google AI Overviews work.
- List 10 to 20 searches a customer would type, including a few with your suburb or region in them.
- Search each one on your phone in a private window, and note whether an AI Overview, a map pack or both appear first.
- For every AI Overview, open its source list and write down each website it cites.
- Write down the organic top 10 for the same search.
- Count how many cited websites also rank, and whether your own site appears in either list.
- Repeat the check every month or two on the same weekday, and put the date on every row.
Common questions
Is SEO still worth it for a local business in 2026?
Yes, for most local service businesses it still is. Google's AI answers draw on pages that are indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and the map pack still leads suburb searches. In our check of 38 Australian searches on 26 October 2026, 26 of 35 AI Overviews cited at least one website from their own organic top 10. What's changed is how you measure it: count enquiries as well as clicks.
Does ranking on page one of Google help you show up in AI search?
Yes, it helps, though it isn't the only route in. In our October 2026 snapshot, 38% of AI Overview citations came from websites that also ranked in the organic top 10 for the same search, and 32% were the exact ranking page. The rest came from a wide spread of sites outside the top 10, including videos, forums and Google's own help. Ranking puts your page in the pool the answer draws from.
Do I need special files or code to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google's guidance on AI features says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations, and that you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Allowing crawling, keeping key content in text and matching structured data to the visible page are the practices Google lists.
Can I stop Google using my page in AI Overviews?
Yes, with snippet controls, but there's a cost. Google's robots meta tag rules say nosnippet applies to AI Overviews and AI Mode and stops the page being used as a direct input to them, and max-snippet limits how much text can be used. Both also cut back your ordinary search snippet, so most local businesses are better off leaving them off service pages.
Why do AI Overviews cite YouTube and Reddit instead of my website?
Usually because those pages answer the question more directly or show first-hand experience. In our snapshot YouTube had 33 of 299 citations and Reddit 13, the two most cited websites. You can't control a forum thread, but you can publish a page that answers the exact question in its first sentence, adds detail only your business knows, and is indexed.
Does local SEO still matter if AI answers the question?
Yes. In our 26 October 2026 snapshot, all three suburb searches opened with a map pack and none showed an AI Overview. Google's help says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, including reviews and links to your business. That work happens in your Google Business Profile, your reviews and your listings, and AI answers haven't replaced it.
How can I tell if AI Overviews are taking my clicks?
You can't see it directly in Search Console at the time of writing (October 2026). Google counts traffic from AI features inside the Web search type, mixed in with ordinary results. One sign worth watching is impressions rising while clicks stay flat on informational pages. Compare that with your calls and form enquiries before deciding a page has stopped working.
Can an agency guarantee my business appears in AI answers?
No. Google says it doesn't guarantee that it will crawl, index or serve any page, and AI answers choose their own sources. An agency can make your pages eligible, clear and worth quoting, check crawler access and track whether you're cited over time. Be wary of anyone who promises a set number of citations or a top spot in an AI answer.
